Simon R. Green was born on August 25, 1955, in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, England. He earned an M.A. in Modern English and American Literature from the University of Leicester. He began writing in 1973, sold his first story, "Manslayer," in 1976, and published his debut novel in 1979, going on to become a highly prolific novelist across science fiction, fantasy, and urban fantasy. He gained wider recognition for novelizing the Kevin Costner film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1989), which sold over 370,000 copies, and by 1988 was selling as many as seven novels in a single year. Green is best known for his long-running series Deathstalker, a space-opera saga of political intrigue and heroism, and for his urban fantasy series Nightside and Ghost Finders, both set in contemporary urban environments that are, in his own description, "slightly off," blending elements of space opera with heroic fantasy. His work has been characterized by reviewers as excellent, fast-paced entertainment, with one critic praising his "widescreen adventures, blockbusters with unlimited budgets," and his Nightside series has been cited in academic discussions of the urban fantasy genre for its distinctive blending of noir and supernatural tropes.
